12 reasons to find your next home in Brighton and Hove

15.08.2017 Site Manager

We like to promote how great living and working in Brighton really is, and so does the rest of the UK, too. Brighton and Hove is regularly featured at the top of national surveys for everything from happiness to its business clusters, but we’ve never sat down to gather them together into a city guide – until now! These 12 top findings paint a picture of what it’s like to live along the sunshine coast – and why you should move here, too!

Life by the sunshine coast

Brighton is officially one of the happiest places to live in 2008, 2012, 2015 and 2017 by various surveys, including one which revealed that 94% of us have a happy home life!

We’re pretty proud of our city. 9 in 10 (91%) of us are proud of where we live, according to YouGov, thanks to our culture, the locals, restaurants and good transport links – give or take!

Brighton is synonymous with beach life, which in itself has earnt it a collection of accolades over the years. Brighton Beach on our doorstep has been likened to some of the world’s best coastal stretches by the Lonely Planet and named as one of the world’s must-visit hotspots, based on TripAdvisor reviews.

Brighton borders one of the newest national parks in the country: the South Downs. You may associate Brighton life with the coast and its bustling city, but 40% of Brighton and Hove is in fact declared as National Park. You need only to travel 10 minutes outside the city to reach chalk grassland, indigenous wildlife and beautiful listed buildings.

Eating out in Brighton is a special affair. According to foodie guides around the web, Brighton is home to the best ice-cream parlours, burger bars and restaurants in the country. The city is a foodie’s delight, from Michelin-star fine dining in Kemptown to fish and chip cafes along the seafront. There’s something to suit all taste buds.

Work and business

Brighton is a great place to work. The city was named as the most entrepreneurial place in the UK this year and the best place to start a business in 2015.

It was also named the 4th happiest city for workers in 2016, which coincides with a similar discovery amongst 10,000 professionals in the same year that ranked Brighton workers as the most satisfied.

Its digital business scene is thriving. Through economic uncertainty, Brighton’s tech cluster has remained unscathed. In 2015, Brighton’s tech cluster played a major role in driving national economic growth, and last year, the Powerhouse Tracker reported that Brighton was one of the best-performing cities of 2016.

Coastal housing market

Hove is consistently named as the best property market in the UK for young professionals for three years running. Surveys between 2014 and 2017, conducted predominantly by Lloyds Bank, all ranked Hove as the top place for young professionals to buy property. Reasons include thriving culture, cheaper prices, nightlife and a healthy work-life balance by the coast.

If you had the foresight to buy a home in Brighton and Hove in the mid-90s, you’re probably feeling smug about your nest egg because Brighton prices have jumped by 500% since 1995.

The Hove market has followed a similar upward trajectory. This summer, Halifax identified Hove as the only property market outside London where property prices have increased by more than six times since 1997 – by 550%, to be precise.

Price growth in Hove hasn’t stopped. While other markets in the south have stalled, Hove homeowners enjoyed an average price rise of 7.07% between January and July.
